Filters for homemade masks

Re filter material for extra layer inside the mask.
Scientists around the country have taken it upon themselves to identify everyday materials that do a better job of filtering microscopic particles. In recent tests, HEPA furnace filters scored well, as did vacuum cleaner bags, layers of 600-count pillowcases and fabric similar to flannel pajamas. Stacked coffee filters had medium scores. Scarves and bandanna material had the lowest scores, but still captured a small percentage of particles.

If you don’t have any of the materials that were tested, a simple light test can help you decide whether a fabric is a good candidate for a mask.  “Hold it up to a bright light,” said Dr. Scott Segal, chairman of anesthesiology at Wake Forest Baptist Health who recently studied homemade masks. “If light passes really easily through the fibers and you can almost see the fibers, it’s not a good fabric. If it’s a denser weave of thicker material and light doesn’t pass through it as much, that’s the material you want to use.”

DIY Tracing Tracking

I am isolated but have not heard a word about tracing COVID-19 in CV.  So I am begging all positive people whether symptomatic or not (and their friends and helpers) to look back and let people know who they may have been close to.  Hopefully physicians are also encouraging this. Plus all the washing, isolating, social distancing, masks, measures too.

Here is advice from Phoenix healthcare (our testers) 5/11:

We are advising all positive patients to self quarantine themselves and to notify their Primary Care Physician. If they do not have a Physician available, they can contact our Physician.
The CDC advises that any patient that has tested negative but has symptoms associated to COVID-19. They should still self quarantine themselves and notify their Primary Care Physician. If they do not have a Physician available, they can contact our Physician.

Double blind in the hearing today (hydroxychloroquine)

Dr Bright and Rep. Bilirakis did not know:
A new study -- the largest of its kind -- shows that hydroxychloroquine, the drug touted by President Trump, does not work against Covid-19 and could cause heart problems.
The study was published Monday in the Journal of the American Medical Association. It follows a study published Thursday in the New England Journal of Medicine that also showed the drug doesn't fight the virus.
Even before these reports were published, the US Food and Drug Administration and the National Institutes of Health issued warnings about using the drugs for coronavirus patients.
"The nail has virtually been put in the coffin of hydroxychloroquine," said Dr. William Schaffner, an infectious disease expert and longtime adviser to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
In the most recent study, researchers at the University at Albany looked at 1,438 patients with coronavirus who were admitted to 25 New York City area hospitals. After statistical adjustments, the death rate for patients taking hydroxychloroquine was similar to those who did not take the drug. The death rate for those taking hydroxychloroquine plus the antibiotic azithromycin, was also similar.
However, the patients who took the drug combination were more than twice as likely to suffer cardiac arrest during the course of the study. Heart issues are a known side effect of hydroxychloroquine.

Thailand simple methods work

Thailand has one of the most successful campaigns against Coronavirus,
This is how:
They spend most of their time outdoors,  pale skin and sunlight makes sure they have enough Vit D.
They turn off a/c and open all windows.
Masks are almost universally worn.
Travel is mostly by moped, not public transport or cars.
At shopping stores and mall, your temperature is taken before you go in.
Doormen splash your hands with alcohol cleaner.
Shopping baskets are cleaned after every use.
There is testing of hotspots and tracing and quarantine, also names of positives are published so chain of infection can be found.
People are sensible.

long-term care residents

As of this afternoon, there are 1,853 cases of COVID-19 among long-term care residents and staff. Sadly, 187 of those confirmed cases have passed away. The Florida Department of Health has released a list of the facilities that have confirmed cases at this link: https://floridahealthcovid19.gov/wp-content/uploads/2020/04/LTCF-List-041920.pdf
If you have any other questions, please don’t hesitate to let me know.

Vitamin D is an important protection

Vitamin D is an important protection against respiratory diseases and coronavirus.  Vitamin D comes mostly from sun exposure and the black and brown skins absorb it more slowly and less than whiter skins.  Maybe that is an additional reason why black and brown skinned people are dying more from the virus.  (As well as all the reasons in the news now).
There is a serious study on Vitamin D in the British Medical Journal BMJ 15th Feb 2017. Randomised, dble blind, placebo controlled, n=10,933.
The protective effect of Vit D ranges from 12% to 70% less respiratory infections, the higher rate in those who were deficient in Vit D.

25 micrograms = 1000 IU. Recommended doses vary a lot, you can read up on that, D is not expensive.

I'm normally a social girl

I'm normally a social girl
I love to meet my mates
But lately with the virus here
We can't go out the gates.
You see, we are the 'oldies' now
We need to stay inside
If they haven't seen us for a while
They'll think we've upped and died.
They'll never know the things we did
Before we got this old
There wasn't any Facebook
So not everything was told.
We may seem, sweet old ladies,
Who would never be uncouth
But we grew up in the 60s -
If you only knew the truth!
There was sex and drugs and rock 'n roll
The pill and miniskirts
We smoked, we drank, we partied
And were quite outrageous flirts.
Then we settled down, got married
And turned into someone's mum,
Somebody's wife, then nana,
Who on earth did we become?
We didn't mind the change of pace
Because our lives were full
But to bury us before we're dead
Is like a red rag to a bull!
So here you find me stuck inside
For 4 weeks, maybe more
I finally found myself again
Then I had to close the door!
It didn't really bother me
I'd while away the hour
I'd bake for all the family
But I've got no bloody flour!
Now Netflix is just wonderful
I like a gutsy thriller
I'm swooning over Idris
Or some random sexy killer.
At least I've got a stash of booze
For when I'm being idle
There's wine and whiskey, even gin
If I'm feeling suicidal!
So let's all drink to lockdown
To recovery and health
And hope this bloody virus
Doesn't decimate our wealth.
We'll all get through the crisis
And be back to join our mates
Just hoping I'm not far too wide
To fit through the flaming gates!

Testing near CV ? ? ? ?

Comm Weiss Team - - "Unfortunately, there is no testing done at this moment unless you work in the healthcare field or are over 65 years of age with the symptoms.   We are asking our residents to shelter in place and  only go out if absolutely necessary.  Please stay home."
+ Thank you for writing to the COVID-19 Call Center.

Testing requires an order from a healthcare provider.

Current testing is being prioritized for individuals who have symptoms of acute lower respiratory illness (e.g., fever, cough, and shortness of breath) and meet at least one of the following criteria:

1. Persons who have had a close contact with a laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 case
2. Persons hospitalized with acute lower respiratory illness of unknown origin
3. History of travel to or from an affected geographic area with widespread community transmission
4. History of international travel or a cruise
5. ≥65 with chronic health conditions
6. Immunocompromised persons

If you fall into any of these categories, contact your primary healthcare provider. If your healthcare provider determines that you need to be tested for COVID-19, they can either collect a test in their office or provide a written order to obtain testing elsewhere. If an order is provided for testing elsewhere, call ahead to coordinate testing with facility. The locations of COVID-19 testing is decided and coordinated at the local community level, visit your local government or county health department website for more information concerning testing sites. The provider/facility that ordered and/or collected the test will provide the results.

This is an emerging, rapidly evolving situation. The CDC and State of Florida will continue to provide updated information and guidance through their websites.

Please be sure to visit and regularly monitor the Department's dedicated COVID-19 webpage at www.FloridaHealth.gov/COVID-19 [floridahealth.gov].  This remains the best and most up-to-date resource for information and guidance regarding COVID-19 in Florida.

You may also visit CDC’s website for more information regarding COVID-19 at https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/ [cdc.gov]

The Call Center can be reached by calling 1-866-779-6121 or emailing COVID-19@flhealth.gov  and is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
