All this work is geared toward creating something powerful and new. ..collaborative experiences and zones that conjure up new worlds. Naturally, there will be celestial components, including a sun goddess art installation, a sun temple, and elemental altars tailored to this year’s journey from light to dark to light again. Some of the eight stages have names like the Eclipse Stage, Sun Stage, Moon Stage, Sky Stage, etc.

There will be a full permaculture design course, complete with herbal arts education and an apothecary. It’s part of the elemental alchemy series, which has four courses centered around yoga, visual art, herbal art, and ritual performances.

Universal access to health services is a founding principle of the NHS.
The NHS has been judged the best, safest and most affordable healthcare system out of 11 countries analyzed and ranked by experts from the influential Commonwealth Fund health thinktank.
It is the second time in a row that the study, which is undertaken every three years, has found the UK to have the highest-rated health system.
The NHS has held on to the top spot despite the longest budget squeeze in its 69-year history, serious understaffing and the disruption caused by a radical restructuring of the service in England in 2013.
Its ranking is even more notable because the thinktank found the UK to put the fourth smallest amount of GDP into healthcare among the 11 countries. While the US spends 16.6% of its national income on health, the UK comes near the bottom, investing just 9.9%. Only New Zealand (9.4%), Norway (9.3%) and Australia (9%) put in less.

Those with hearing loss don’t have to pay thousands of dollars to get effective relief, according to a study in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

Personal sound amplifiers purchased over the counter can perform nearly as well in improving speech understanding as hearing aids costing five times as much, the study found. It can be read at j.mp/heaids.

Hearing aids can only be purchased in the United States from a licensed professional. They cost an average of $4,700 for two devices, which are not covered by Medicare, the study stated.

Personal sound amplifiers cannot legally be sold to help the hearing-impaired, but are sometimes used for that purpose. The expense of professional hearing aids places them out of reach of many people.

Hearing specialists have said some of these sound amplification devices are being sold inappropriately as a hearing corrective.

The study suggests an alternative, which is to set up a new regulatory category for over-the-counter hearing devices that meet specifications.

Researchers led by Nicholas S. Reed of Johns Hopkins School of Medicine compared one hearing aid, which costs $1,910, to five personal sound amplifiers, costing from $350 to $30.

The devices were tested by 42 adults with mild to moderate hearing loss. The subjects had an average age of 72, and two-thirds were women.

All testing was performed in a sound booth by an audiologist, the study said. The testers were presented with a “moderately difficult listening environment,” with sentences delivered by a speaker directly in front of the subjects, while speech babble was projected directly behind the subjects.

“The mean unaided accuracy was 76.5 percent,” the study stated. “The hearing aid improved speech understanding accuracy to 88.4 percent for an absolute improvement difference of 11.9 percentage points.”

Three of the personal sound amplifiers improved speech understanding to within 5 percentage points of the hearing aid. One device produced little improvement, and the fifth actually decreased speech understanding.

Limitations of the study include the modest number of participants, and testing with a small sample of hearing technologies, it stated.

And, unbelievably, at exactly the same time, they want to provide the top 1 percent with $3 trillion in tax cuts. The very rich get much richer, and they get huge tax cuts. The middle class shrinks, and the poor struggle, and they will find it harder to get health care, housing, nutrition, education or clean water.

VISIT THE MANATEES!

Bobbi Levin is an excellent writer, and when she writes a story for the Reporter about a place to visit as she did recently, she makes you want to go! So today a friend and I visited the manatees at the Florida Power & Light Discovery Center, which is right next to the FPL power plant. You should go!

I had seen manatees before at the springs at Kelly State Park in northern Florida, but the big lumbering creatures didn't seem that interesting. Too docile for me, I guess, and I was into swimming-rafting down the river at the time. But at the FPL center it was different. It's amazing what a little information can do to stir up your interest in a subject, and there was plenty in the easy-to-read informational exhibits. Then we latched onto a tour guide who was just super. Twenty people followed her around (NOT a long walk), listened with rapt attention, and pounded her with questions.

You have to catch the manatees in the warm discharge water from the power plant at the right time, and we hadn't seen one, but were still having a wonderful time when someone spotted one headed for the U-shaped warm water area. Did I say "lumbering"? These guys can MOVE when they want to—20 miles an hour, the tour guide told us! We couldn't keep up to him (or her).

I could go on and on, telling you the fascinating stuff we learned, but you need to go for yourself. Get a cup of coffee at the snack shop when you go into the exhibit building and make liberal use of the comfortably molded bench seats to sit down on when your legs feel tired. Relax and enjoy! The center is open Tuesday through Sunday 9 to 4 year-round, but the best viewing, they say, will be only through March. After that and until the fall, the manatees can find the warm waters they need without recourse to the FPL area.
