New Word - Phubbing

There is phone answering rudeness and then there is playing with a smart phone in company, Augh!
Phubbing stands for “phone snubbing,” and it’s increasingly common practice. With smartphones offering a whole world of time-wasting possibilities it’s all too easy to be tempted to do something other than talk to someone in the real world.

Survey in Britain: 27 percent said they would answer their phone in the middle of a face-to-face conversation. A third confessed that they would answer the phone in a restaurant and 19 per cent said they would while being served in a shop. I think USA is more.

  1. Gentle reader: In general Mr. Manners agrees with you that it is rude to answer one's cell phone while talking with someone else in person, eating out, etc. If it's an emergency, that's something else. One should then apologize profusely to the person(s) he is with and keep the phone conversation as brief as possible, apologizing again afterward.
